What are the General Teaching Requirements?
Besides being flexible, having a positive attitude, and being open to exploring new cultures, the requirements to teach ESL overseas vary from country to country. However, the general requirements are as follows:
- be a native English speaker
- hold a Degree (Bachelor's or higher) in any discipline
- have a current passport that is valid for at least 6 months or more
Some other general requirements that are not necessarily required but certainly preferred:
- be a Certified Teacher (Teaching Certificate, TEFL, TESOL etc.)
- be 100% physically and mentally fit to endure living overseas for at least 6 months or more
- have teaching experience (this could include paid or voluntary work as a tutor, mentor and/or trainer as well)
- international travel experience (either having lived overseas or having some extensive personal/business travel experience)
- have no criminal record (a criminal background check is often needed to teach)
- hold a valid passport from the following countries: Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the UK or the US
Note: most of the general requirements above are often imposed due to the eligibility requirements for visas in the respective country that the teaching position is available in.
